Policy Work In Action

Abstract: Via our direct-to-door light bulb delivery impact measurements, the data gained drives our sociological and policy research to provide insight as we work to address the issue of misplaced incentives that accrue to landlords and not renter/ tenants. Our preliminary findings suggest that renters / tenants are generally not provided opportunities to utilize green Energy Star™ appliances because facilities managers and landlords typically purchase less efficient white good (i.e. electric stoves, dish washers, refrigerator etc.). A long-term outcome of this study could facilitate addressing these issues through realtor and property management associations and municipal and state governments.

Research Findings

The following information, listed below, was extracted from our previous five installation events which includes recipient contact information, household demographics, CFL Tracking Data, Energy Audit, and Follow-Up Questions

Household Snapshot

Home Ownership (Question 16)
Of recipients engaged, 64% are renters whereas 34% own their homes.

Energy Audit and Monthly Energy Usage

Approximate Average Monthly Energy Bill (Question 20a)
40% of all households have an average monthly energy bill between $100-$150; 22%: $150-$200; and 20% of households have average monthly energy bill of $1-$50. The remainder of recipients with $50-$100 (9%) and $200+ monthly energy bills totals at 18% divided between six subsets. That is to say, 40% of recipients have energy bills greater than $150.00, monthly.

Approximate # of Fixed Lighting Fixtures (Question 21a)
Fixed lighting fixtures, as defined by the project include, “lighting that is turned on with a switch and/or permanently affixed within the household.” 42% of recipients have approximately 6-10 fixed lighting fixtures; 27%: 1-5 fixed lighting fixtures; and 10% with 11-15 fixed lighting fixtures. The remaining 21% includes 16 fixed lighting fixtures or more divided among six additional subsets.

Approximate # of Non-Fixed Lighting Fixtures (Question 22a)
Non-fixed lighting fixtures, as defined by the project, include “lighting plugged into a socket and/or not permanently affixed in the household.” 68% of recipients have approximately 1-5 non-fixed lighting fixtures; 15%: 6-10 non-fixed lighting fixtures; and the remaining 3% with 11-15 non-fixed lighting fixtures.

CFL Tracking Data

Harvested: Approximate # of incandescent bulbs Removed (Question 26c)
Harvest Teams removed 1-5 incandescent bulbs in 34% of households retrofitted; 6-10 incandescent bulbs were removed in 23% of total households; and 11% of households, teams removed 21-25 incandescent bulbs. Within the 13% of households remaining, teams removed more than 26 incandescent bulbs divided over 7 additional subsets excluding the 11-15 (10%) and 16-20 (9%) incandescent bulb subsets.

“Sowed”: Approximate # of CFLs Installed (Question 28c)
Harvest Teams installed 6-10 CFLs in 33% of households retrofitted; 1-5 CFLs in 23%; and 21-25 CFLs in 13%. Within the 11% of households remaining, teams removed more than 26 incandescent bulbs divided over 7 additional subsets excluding the 11-15 (11%) and 16-20 (9%) CFLs subsets. That is to say, 33% of all households retrofitted received more than 16 CFLs each.

YARDSTICK Social Impact Research Methodology

YARDSTICK Social Impact Research Methodology: The Fund defines success by measuring its progress against the objectives mentioned above. To track progress, the Fund employs a robust, content management system over 432 key performance indicators, 178 benchmarks, 165 milestones and 60 critical success factors to aggregate the social and ecological impacts of the Fund. More than just an inventory-tracking tool, this solution generates reports for our sponsors and stakeholders on progress, in addition to highlighting opportunities for continuing engagement. In addition to increasing the transparency and creditability of the Fund’s impact by creating a third party monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) process the YARDSTICK attempts to serve as a model for social impact monitoring for ventures that serve communities of modest means in the field of behavior modification in sustainability. A full report is available upon request. HEIDI REPORT: The Heightened Environmental Intelligence™ Debriefing & Ecological Impact Report (HEIDI REPORT) is a PLAYBOOK-generated dashboard report which aggregates over 83-indicators to be shared with volunteers, sponsors as “report back” after each RDA. Examples of HEIDI REPORTS are available upon request. Both the YARDSTICK REPORT and HEIDI REPORT will be generated perceptually on a monthly, quarterly and annual bases.
